Mental Health Services

Dr. Bhuvaneswaran is providing  mental health services via Telehealth.

Currently available services include: 

  • weekly or biweekly psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • affordable individual and group therapy including specific approaches affirming the concerns of people of color and LGBTQIA clients
  • standard psychopharmacology (prescription medication preceded by a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and biweekly or monthly follow up) for interested patients already seeing a therapist on a regular basis
  • wellness education (informed by Buddhist and other traditions), using breath-focused meditation, visualization and positive psychology to reduce stress
 
To establish treatment:
 
  • complete a telephone intake with Dr. Chaya at no cost
  • determine a safe treatment plan as well as ancillary resources (crisis team, emergency department, other services) to ensure acute and non-acute treatment needs will be met
  • clarify coordination with your primary care physician if the medications you will be prescribed require laboratory testing and/or EKG or other physical examination
  • determine whether you prefer in person appointments in Back Bay, Boston, or telehealth (using HIPAA-protected Doxy.me)


*Note: While Dr. Bhuvaneswaran does not engage with insurance paperwork directly, she will help you complete reimbursement forms.

Narrative Medicine

Integrate your story in your care by working with a doctor-writer devoted to learning and understanding your story and helping you construct your own healing and empowering narrative.

Group Therapy

Dr. Bhuvaneswaran runs supportive therapy groups for women of color, age 18+; for young adults undergoing transitions; and for other groups of patients in the past (including for chronically medically ill patients at the Massachusetts General Hospital Group Psychotherapy Center. She also has training in trauma-related recovery in a group setting gained from her American Psychiatric Association-funded work at the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety is particularly interested and committed to group therapy that honors all members and creates a truly safe space.  

Current Group

On Putting Ourselves First: A weekly group meeting for 6 weeks, using a cognitive behavioral, diaspora narrative and supportive approach to reflecting about quality of life, mood, anxiety and how to implement more self-care and resilience practices.

About Dr. Chaya

Dr. Bhuvaneswaran received her MD from Stanford School of Medicine and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital – McLean Hospital for her residency in Adult Psychiatry. She is also certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on trauma and narrative therapies. She is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), and has worked with diverse communities to advance a vision of mental health as necessary self-care as well as treatment for defined conditions. Dr. Bhuvaneswaran is interested in helping patients directly as well as connecting them with additional resources and support and during the intake process. She is glad to connect you with support services as well as defining a treatment plan.

Chaya’s background includes extensive work in public health and community organizing. Her work on using poetry writing and creative writing to teach literacy in community settings has been funded by the Carolyn Foundation, The Echoing Green Foundation, and Yale University.
